How does it work?
Laser tattoo removal works by emitting short pulses of laser light into the tattoo. With laser technology, the light is absorbed by the ink particles in the skin, making those ink particles shatter into tiny fragments. The body has the ability to flush out those tiny particles, permanently removing your tattoo forever.
Is it safe?
Laser tattoo removal is safe if performed by a licensed, certified laser technician. During your consultation with the laser technician they will discuss any factors that would make laser removal difficult or not possible for you. If you have concerns, speak to your doctor or dermatologist before undergoing your first laser treatment.
Does it hurt?
Most people say that laser tattoo removal feels like a rubber band snapping against the skin. Others say it feels like splashing bacon grease on the skin.
Every person's pain tolerance is different. The sessions are very fast in comparison to sitting for a tattoo- often only several minutes of lasering. If you could withstand the pain of getting a tattoo, you should have no problem bearing the minor discomfort of tattoo removal.
Will it remove the tattoo completely?
To fully remove the tattoo depends on various factors such as the size, colour, and age of the tattoo, as well as the individual’s skin type.
On average, multiple sessions spaced several weeks apart are required for complete removal. The number of sessions can be assessed with more accuracy after 1-3 sessions. Most tattoos require between four and twelve treatment sessions to completely disappear.
How faded does the tattoo need to be before getting a cover up?
Laser tattoo removal treatment will lighten your ink in preparation for a cover-up tattoo. Depending on what you want to cover it with- this can be assessed by one of our tattoo artists at Be Good Tattoo Co. as you complete treatments. They can share with you design possibilities that fit your vision and give you an idea of how far it needs to be faded before that is possible.
How long does the treatment take and how many sessions?
Treatment sessions vary in length, depending on the size of the tattoo. For example, a small tattoo only takes a few seconds per treatment session. Even large tattoos that took hours to apply, can be treated in just a few minutes.

Does the location or size of the tattoo matter?
Laser tattoo removal can be performed on any tattoo on any part of the body, with the exception of some small areas around the eyes.
Laser tattoo removal can be done on any tattoo, regardless of how big or small it is. The larger the tattoo, the longer each session will take.
What are the side effects of laser tattoo treatment?
Following laser tattoo removal treatment, it is common to see redness and swelling on the surrounding skin and possibly on the tattoo itself. The skin may also bruise, blister or feel sore.
This is normal and part of the healing process.
Everyone's body responds differently as it heals. You can always reach out if you have any concern.
Does laser tattoo removal cause scarring?
If you don’t follow the proper aftercare instructions, you could see some scarring. If your skin develops burns or blisters, resist the urge to pick or pop them, as this is the easiest way to create a scar.
Most people see no scars after treatment.
Are all tattoo colours equally easy to remove?
No, some colours are more challenging to remove than others. Dark colours like black and blue usually respond best to laser treatment, while lighter colours such as yellow and green may require more sessions or specialized lasers.
Contact LMNL for a consultation to see if it is the right laser removal studio for you.
Who cannot get laser tattoo removal?
You need a healthy immune system for laser tattoo removal to work. If you have any medical condition that compromises your immune system this treatment is not for you.
We don’t recommend laser tattoo removal if you suffer from the following conditions:
-
Diabetes (insulin-dependent)
-
Hemophilia
-
HIV
-
Hepatitis B or C
-
Eczema
-
Epilepsy
-
Allergies to tattoo products (inks, pigments, etc.)
-
Keloid scars
* Sun Exposure & Tanning- Do not allow the areas you plan to treat to be exposed to the sun for at least 6 weeks before treatment. LMNL cannot treat tanned skin from UV exposure without the increased risk of burn and permanent pigment changes. If you have tanned during your treatment you must wait 6 weeks from exposure before resuming treatment. Self-tanning creams which involve an increase in melanin are also forbidden on the treated area before and after to avoid any increased risks.
* Sun-Sensitizing/ Photosensitizing Medications (eg. anti-acne, antibiotics, etc.)- It is essential to inform your practitioner if you take any before beginning treatment. For your safety, laser removal cannot be performed due to the skin being ultra sensitive to light (UV) and therefore creates an increased risk of burning the skin with the laser procedure.
*Pregnancy- There is a lack of research about the effects of laser tattoo removal on pregnant women. You shouldn’t worry or be upset if you have already been to a session or two without knowing that you were pregnant. There have been no reported cases of harm to a baby or mother as a result of this. Since we don’t have sufficient research, we do not take the risk. During pregnancy, you probably want to take every precaution you can. Consult with your doctor first, but you should be able to continue with your sessions after the baby is born and you have finished breastfeeding.
Can anything be done to reduce pain?
Don’t let the fear of pain scare you away from getting your unwanted tattoo removed.
At LMNL, we want to make your experience as quick and painless as possible – which is why we use the Zimmer Cryo to manage discomfort for all of our clients. One of the best and most effective ways to minimize pain is by using a Zimmer Cryo skin cooling machine. This device is able to cool the skin before, during and after treatment without interfering with the power of the laser beam. It does this by blowing out freezing cold air (at a temperature of -30⁰ C) through an easily positionable hose. The cool air is harmless to the skin but lessens the intensity of the laser over your unwanted tattoo.
*About 30 to 45 minutes before your treatment, you can take a pain reliever- Acetaminophen (or Tylenol). This could help alleviate your discomfort if you take it before your session. Acetaminophen calms your nerve endings, making the sensations less intense from the laser. However, It’s important that you don’t confuse Acetaminophen (Tylenol) for other mild pain medication. Aspirin and Ibuprofen will both cause you to bruise after treatment.
*Gel ice packs can numb the area but they can only be applied before and after treatment – not during the treatment when you need it most. However, ice packs work well for reducing pain and swelling at home after treatment has ended. As part of your post-session care, apply one for 5-10 minutes over the bandaged area for relief.
Can I use numbing cream/ Does LMNL offer numbing cream?
LMNL does not offer numbing cream but will not stop you from using it if you have purchased your own.
Numbing creams are not very effective due to the fact they will only numb the top layer of your skin and do not concentrate deep enough. The pain you experience from a tattoo removal laser is happening when the ink is shattering below the skin, and numbing creams aren’t able to go this deep.
What should I expect during a laser tattoo removal session?
During the session, the tattooed area will be cleaned, and protective eyewear will be provided.
The laser technician will then pass the laser over the tattooed skin, delivering short pulses of light.
Afterward, cooling applications and soothing ointment will be applied to the treated area.
How do I best prepare for laser tattoo removal?
*Eat and hydrate before your appointment.
*Wear loose fitting clothing that doesn’t have to touch the affected area if possible.
* Stay out of the sun! Laser tattoo removal takes place over many months, and it’s a bad time to work on your all-over tan. If you must enjoy that sweet Vitamin D, at least keep the area being treated covered with sunscreen! Clothing is even better. Tanned skin is prone to adverse reactions and LMNL will not treat recently tanned skin due to risk of increased skin burn and increased likelihood of permanent skin pigment changes.
*If you are a smoker, try to reduce or quit smoking, as smokers tend to heal slower due to a decreased immune system response.
